Getting Fit for 2019!

The start of a new year, people make their New Year’s resolutions, and one of the most popular resolutions that always seems to top the list is getting fit and hitting the gym!

It certainly is one of mine after all those spiced eggnogs.

Despite all our efforts throughout the next few months, some are left disappointed when they don’t see the results they had hoped for. People are all gung-ho on Jan. 1 and tend to burn out by February, A whopping 80 percent of people drop their resolutions for keeping fit and losing weight by mid-February. This is usually due to unrealistic goals and doing too much too soon, instead of looking at small goals that are more achievable.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends adults between the ages of 18 to 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous aerobic physical activity per week.

We are all unique in how we respond to exercise and many factors including age, gender, genetics and current physical fitness, are things to be considered. It is best to be realistic with what you can maintain and incorporate into your lifestyle. Such as committing to walking to work for the next 12 weeks or going to the gym three times a week. These are achievable and attainable goals. Making drastic weight loss goals leads to unrealistic results.

If you haven't already, now is the time to get going and start making those small changes. I promise you will be pleasantly surprised at how rewarding it will be feel to see difference in your attitude, energy levels and overall well being.

What's your get fit goal for 2019?
